As with many medications that alter brain chemistry, there are several things to watch for when a patient initially starts the medication. Symptoms that require immediate attention include mood changes, suicidal behaviors, delusions and hallucinations. More common and less serious side effects that occur when taking the drug include loss of appetite, headaches, dizziness, constipation, nausea and vomiting. Since it does cause dizziness, patients are advised not to drive or operate any heavy machines. If Strattera is prescribed for a child, the child's height and weight must be monitored because it may have a minor effect on these measurements.

While there may be some unpleasant side effects to Strattera, a few weeks on the medication and these usually subside. Since it is a non-stimulant, it causes fewer side effects than stimulant medications and with comparable results.
